Yahooformerly an essential information platform for Internet searches, has acquired Artifact, the AI-powered news aggregation and discovery platform created by the co-founders of Instagram. Over the years, the platform has lost ground to Google and other platforms when it comes to searching for information and news. According to Statista, in January 2024, Yahoo! accounted for approximately 1.1% of the global search market across all devices.
According to Yahoo’s announcement, Artifact – founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger – will no longer operate as a standalone app. It will function as a proprietary AI-based personalization technology and benefit from more features built into Yahoo, including Yahoo News appIn the coming months.
How this deal will help Yahoo, Artifact
Yahoo has a large base of news readers, and Artifact apparently failed to gain the attention it sought. Yahoo is expected to help the co-founder scale Artifact by delivering the most relevant stories – news and content experiences – to users through AI to hundreds of millions of users worldwide.
“Yahoo was one of the first to combine human and algorithmic news curation. Since then, the machine learning and personalization landscape has changed dramatically and Artifact has innovated with the best technology to meet the needs of the moment,” said Kat Downs Mulder, EVP and General Manager of Yahoo News.
“Artifact has become a beloved product and we are excited to be able to continue to develop this technology and continue our mission to become the trusted guide to digital information and the best curator connecting people to the content that matters most to them,” Mulder added.
Artifact has an AI-powered discovery engine that surfaces the content users most want to see and becomes more tailored to their interests over time. The result is a personalized news feed that, along with numerous features, aims to improve the quality of the experience.
“AI has allowed us to offer users a better experience by discovering quality content that interests them. Yahoo recognizes this opportunity and we couldn’t be more excited to see what we’ve built on live via Yahoo News,” said Kevin Systrom, CEO and co-founder of Artifact.
Yahoo’s acquisition of Artifact closed on March 29.
