Yahoo has acquired Artifact, the AI-powered news aggregation and discovery platform created by Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. Following this acquisition, Artifact will no longer function as a standalone application. Proprietary AI-based personalization technology and other features will be integrated into Yahoo, including the Yahoo News app, in the coming months.
The acquisition furthers Yahoo’s commitment to providing trusted news and information to hundreds of millions of users around the world, the release said. It also accelerates Yahoo’s vision of providing a more personalized experience for discovering news and information across all platforms.

“Yahoo was one of the first to combine human and algorithmic news curation. Since then, the machine learning and personalization landscape has changed dramatically and Artifact has innovated with the best technology to meet the needs of the moment,” said Kat Downs Mulder, EVP and General Manager of Yahoo News.
“Artifact has become a beloved product and we are excited to continue to develop this technology and continue our mission of becoming the trusted guide to digital information and the best curator connecting people to the content that matters most to them.” »
Artifact’s mission was focused on delivering the most relevant stories to users through AI, using proprietary technology to deliver curated news and content experiences.
Integrating these features into the Yahoo Wallet accelerates the ability to connect users with even richer content experiences and tailored personalization, the release added.
“We’ve created an intuitive product experience that users love and that can benefit millions of people. Yahoo brings the scale needed to help the product achieve what we envision while maintaining the belief that connecting people to trusted sources of news and information is more essential than ever,” said Kevin Systrom, CEO and co -founder of Artifact.
“AI has allowed us to offer users a better experience by discovering quality content that interests them. Yahoo recognizes this opportunity and we couldn’t be more excited to see what we’ve built on live via Yahoo News.
Artifact is a “personalized news feed driven by artificial intelligence (AI),” according to its site. The application was announced by Systrom and Krieger on Twitter where the couple invited users to register and join the community.
The app is still in private beta mode but in an interview with Platform, a social media and platform news site, Systrom said the easiest way to understand the app is to think of it as a TikTok for text. The app opens with a feed of popular articles carefully chosen from a curated list of publishers. These publishers will include sites like the New York Times, small-scale blogs focused on niche topics and much more. When you tap on an article, Artifact’s algorithm takes note and suggests similar articles and stories in the future.
According to Financial Times, the app also uses AI to ensure it avoids “filter bubbles” by also promoting content that may challenge previously held views. The app basically sums up its name and represents the fusion of articles, facts and artificial intelligence.
