Nikhil Deshpande, Georgia’s chief digital and artificial intelligence officer, said the state is currently in the process of develop its ethical guidelines for AI with help from an expert: Rose Procter, executive director of the TRUIST Center for Ethical Leadership at the University of North Georgia. Deshpande said that even if no one in the state government is acting with bad intentions, it is still possible that undesirable results could occur if the state has not implemented thorough ethical guidelines regarding its uses of AI. “We see this on social media,” he said. “When social media came along, everyone rushed to adopt every new tool and app that came out, but we didn’t really think about the impact on kids. And now we see so many unfortunate events happening, and that’s where we think we should be ahead of the curve.
