Why does UNESCO focus on AI separately from other digital technologies in education?
AI stands out from other digital technologies in its potential to profoundly transform societies, economies, and education systems. Unlike traditional information and communication technologies (ICTs), AI poses unique ethical and social challenges, such as issues of fairness, transparency, privacy, and accountability. In addition, AI’s unique ability to mimic human behavior has a direct impact on human action. These challenges require specific skills that go beyond the scope of traditional digital literacy.
UNESCO has been providing guidance on digital skills for many years, but the new AI competency frameworks are designed to address the specificities of AI. They emphasize a human-centered approach to AI education, promoting critical thinking, ethical considerations and the responsible use of AI technologies.
