The University of South Florida (USF) has announced plans to create a new college focused on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and computer science.
According to the university, the goal of the new college is to position the Tampa area and the state of Florida as leaders in this growing industry.
USF would be the first university in the state to create a college dedicated to AI and cybersecurity. The new college would offer undergraduate and graduate programs to prepare students for in-demand careers, enable faculty to conduct innovative research and develop industry partnerships.
Studies show that the demand for AI-related jobs has quintupled. More than 40% of organizations who are experiencing a shortage of cybersecurity professionals say they are unable to find qualified candidates.
USF President Rhea Law said, “As AI and cybersecurity rapidly evolve, the demand for skilled professionals in these fields continues to grow, as does the need for more research to better understand how to use powerful new technologies in ways that improve our society. Through the expertise of our faculty and our strong partnerships with the business community, the University of South Florida is strategically positioned to be a local leader in the fields.
Prasant Mohapatra, USF executive vice president and vice president for academic affairs, said: “The establishment of this college would align with USF’s strategic initiative to enhance academic excellence and research in key areas of societal needs and opportunities. Building on our multidisciplinary strengths, such as health, engineering. , arts and humanities as well as cybersecurity, we aim to support our strategic objectives of advancing student success, promoting continued professional growth, fostering partnerships between industry, government and community and to propel the university towards the top 25.”
