SINGAPORE – UOB employees can move into new roles within the bank under a new program launched on Oct 11.
Under the Better U Pivot program, participating employees will be able to move into jobs in areas such as risk and compliance or sales and customer experience.
The bank will offer up to 500 opportunities over two years to employees in operational and administrative roles.
Program participants are chosen based on their needs, such as those whose jobs may be affected by developments such as digitalization or improvements in automation.
Selected employees will undergo 12 months of training, with personalized learning pathways including structured on-the-job training and development opportunities, including courses delivered by external parties.
They will also benefit from close mentoring from designated coaches and recruitment managers, who will provide advice and wellbeing support as employees adapt to their new roles.
Better U Pivot was launched at the annual UOB Employee Festival held on October 11 at UOB Plaza 1.
Ms Sherlyn Yong, 28, was among those who joined the program’s pilot, which took place in 2021.
She joined UOB in 2015 as a customer service assistant and is now a financial crime operations analyst at the bank.
“In the financial crime department, we review customer profiles based on factors such as the source of their wealth, the size of their investments and other factors to ensure they match our appetite for commercial risk,” said Ms. Yong, a state graduate. in banking and finance from Kaplan in 2018.
She decided to change roles within the bank as she wanted to explore more career development opportunities.
“I also wanted to be able to see more perspectives on banking and have a better understanding of the banking system,” she said.
One of the challenges she faced was moving from a customer-facing role to a backend role.
“In my new role, I need to know a client’s profile through documents and not by meeting them or having a conversation with them in real life,” Ms Yong said.
“I went from a highly interactive job to a role requiring very little real-world interaction. It was a challenge for me because I love interacting with customers,” she said.
“But I enjoy my job now because I can learn more about the client,” she added.
