LG AI Research joins the UNESCO Business Council for AI Ethics, signing a letter of intent to promote, advance and implement the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence ( IA) approved by the UNESCO General Conference in November 2021.
Through this council, LG AI Research will engage in activities to strengthen technical capabilities in AI ethics, implement the ethical impact assessment framework, and promote the development of AI that respects human rights.
The partnership is anchored in a shared vision of harnessing AI for the benefit and development of society. In August 2022, LG AI Research announced the “AI Ethical Principles” aimed at establishing standards of appropriate behavior and value judgment for all members of the LG Group. Indeed, LG AI Research 2023 Responsibility Report on AI Ethics specifically cites their adherence to UNESCO Recommendation on AI Ethics as a guiding framework for harnessing AI technology responsibly.
This initiative aligns with UNESCO’s mandate to guide the development of AI with ethical integrity. The main initiatives of this partnership include supporting the implementation of ethical principles by the private sector, the use of ethical impact assessment tools, generating knowledge on the ethical impact of AI and promoting discussion and awareness of ethical AI practices.
