KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Cybersecurity has been making headlines in the Kansas City area in recent weeks as several entities have fallen victim to attacks.
On Thursday, the University of Missouri at Kansas City announced it had reached an agreement with the United States Cyber Command conduct research and training on issues such as cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.
It is the first university to enter into an agreement with the USCC, created in 2010 within the US Department of Defense.

School leaders say the deal places the school “at the forefront of cybersecurity and AI research.”
“This partnership represents a key step in demonstrating the technical relevance of UMKC and the faculty, staff and students of the Missouri Institute for Defense and Energy,” MEDIUM Interim Director Travis Fields, Ph.D., said in a press release Thursday. “We are excited to work on the research and development of cyber solutions for the Department of Defense.
MIDE is based on UMKC’s main campus.
The school also entered into an educational partnership agreement with USCC that will provide UMKC students with internships, conferences and research related to AI and cybersecurity issues.
