Apple and Meta discuss AI
Apple and Meta have held discussions about bringing Meta’s generative AI technologies to iPhone maker’s products, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources familiar with the talks. Although Apple, at its WWDC event on June 10, announced its own AI – that is, Apple Intelligence – as well as an upcoming integration with OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, this was not of an exclusive deal and the premium gadget maker said it would also consider a partnership. with other AI companies in the future.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, said earlier that Apple wants to integrate Google’s Gemini technologies into devices. While Apple works on its own AI products, partnering with a larger company can save on data storage and processing expenses. However, cross-platform privacy concerns are a question mark for many customers.
Meta launches AI chatbot in India across all platforms
Meta launches its AI chatbot – Meta AI – in India in English on WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and meta.ai. This release comes just days after Google announced the launch of its AI-enabled generative chatbot app Gemini in India as well. Meta AI is powered by the most advanced large Meta language model to date: Llama 3.
Meta AI is intended to serve as an assistant to users in their applications. For example, users can ask the chatbot for restaurant recommendations or stopping destinations when planning an outing with friends on WhatsApp group chat. On the other hand, they can leverage technology to create their own images and animate them.
EU cat control law sparks online privacy fears
The discussion monitoring law proposed by the European Union aims to detect child sexual abuse media is sent via end-to-end encrypted digital platforms, but some members of the bloc have flagged serious privacy concerns while others have supported the planned legislation. The law was proposed by EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson in May 2022, but countries including France, Germany and Poland oppose scanning messages by breaking end-to-end encryption .
Tech companies like Apple and Signal have also criticized parts of the bill over privacy concerns. However, in less than a week, a new draft proposal is expected to be considered, as lawmakers consider targeting media content rather than just text messages.
