The Dallas Cowboys: a business beyond football
Messick and Thompson shed light on the vast business operations behind the iconic Dallas Cowboys NFL team. Contrary to the common perception that the Cowboys are simply a football team, with a business empire spanning various industries, showcasing the entrepreneurial spirit of owner Jerry Jones.
“Jerry Jones is an entrepreneur. He has ideas, and from a technology standpoint, you just have to make them happen,” Messick said. “Every time you have to position yourself, it is very difficult to anticipate… three years during which an idea can appear out of nowhere and which you had not planned and you have to react. »
The scope of the Cowboys’ operations, which include medical imaging facilities, retail stores, construction projects and even eSports projects, is vast. This diversification requires an adaptable technological infrastructure. “Video is essential for coaches and players. This is where you study; you study the opponent, pick your draft, your players,” Messick said. “When you have this much video… everything has to be fast. They want to know where their data is and it’s protected under our umbrella in our private cloud.
The spirit of collaboration within the sports industry is a key driver of innovation. Teams and organizations frequently share best practices and technological advancements. This collaboration extends beyond the NFL, with interactions and knowledge sharing occurring globally across various sporting disciplines, according to Messick.
“The NFL is doing a great job of bringing all the technology teams together to do this and brainstorm and share information. It’s a club,” he said. “And not just the NFL, it’s all sports… it’s like a community spread all over the world. We just share and… it’s fun and you want to raise the boat, you want to raise this experience across the world, because all the fans, no matter the sport, they’re asking for it.
