HOUSTON, TX / ACCESSWIRE / September 9, 2024 / The SAFE-AI Working Group has announced a new report that provides organizations with a comprehensive framework to evaluate the deployment of automated interpretation solutions. Developed by CSA Research on behalf of SAFE-AI, the report presents a six-dimensional evaluation grid designed to help organizations assess both the potential benefits and risks associated with automated speech-to-speech interpretation technologies, also known as automated interpretation with artificial intelligence (AIxAI).
The new report, Automated Speech Interpretation: Six Assessment Dimensions for Professional Deploymentsserves as an extension of the official document Guidance from the SAFE-AI Working Group on AI and Interpretation Services published in June 2024. This addition provides organizations with practical tools to evaluate automated solutions, with specific areas of focus including input-output reliability, technology capabilities, alternative solutions, and the impacts, both intended and unintended, of implementing these technologies.
“The six dimensions of this report are designed to help organizations make informed decisions about where AI-assisted interpretation can be beneficial and where it is too risky to implement,” said Holly Silvestri, spokesperson for the SAFE-AI Working Group. “By addressing critical areas such as end-user benefits, operational capabilities, and ethical considerations, the report is an important tool to ensure fairness and accountability in AI applications for interpretation.”
While the report acknowledges the potential of AI in professional use cases, ranging from business-to-consumer interactions to government services, it emphasizes caution. It encourages organizations to carefully evaluate AI interpretation solutions, particularly in live interactions where risks may be heightened. Importantly, the report emphasizes that organizations are still responsible for meeting legal and regulatory requirements for language access.
The publication of this report is part of the task force’s ongoing mission to ensure the safe, ethical, and equitable use of AI in interpreting services. The National Council on Interpreting in Health Care recently adapted the task force’s guidance in its discussion paper, Guidance for healthcare institutions evaluating the potential use of AI-generated interpretation. In addition, the new brand name Coalition for Equity in Sign Language in Technology, formerly The AI and Sign Language Interpreting Advisory Group will host a one-day (in-person, live) workshop on AI, Interpreting and Language Access on November 13, 2024, just prior to the biennial meeting of the Conference of Interpreter Trainers (CIT).
