With artificial intelligence (AI) reshaping the educational landscape, educators are navigating a new world of opportunities and challenges. Jackson College and Jackson County Intermediate School District will host a one-day workshop, From Values to Vision: Rethinking Our Approaches to AI in EducationSaturday, October 12 from 9am to 3pm in the JC Bert Walker Hall Community Rooms.
Nearly two years after the introduction of ChatGPT and the widespread use of other AI tools like Gemini and Magic School, the education sector has entered a new era. This interactive workshop will provide educators with an opportunity to explore how to ethically and effectively integrate AI into their classrooms while addressing concerns about academic honesty and the evolving needs of students.
Dr. Troy HicksProfessor of English and Education at Central Michigan University, will lead the workshop. As Chair of the Department of Teachers and Special Education and Director of the Chippewa River Writing Project, Dr. Hicks brings a wealth of experience in AI and education. He will lead participants through a day of exploration, offering practical tools and ideas to help teachers align AI with their educational values.

Designed for teachers in grades 4-12, this workshop will help teachers rethink assignments and the role of AI in the classroom (5 hours of SCECH continuing education). Participants will be equipped with strategies to integrate AI tools in a way that promotes ethical education, enhances learning, and meets the needs of their students. Bring your curiosity and willingness to play with AI tools to this interactive workshop where we will rethink our approach to AI.
The cost to attend the workshop is $25 (paid through the JCISD system for local educators); Jackson College faculty and staff are free. Educators are encouraged to bring their laptops and an open mind to this interactive, hands-on event.
