OpenAI on Wednesday shared its Model Spec, the first draft of a document that highlights the company’s approach toward building a responsible and ethical society. artificial intelligence (AI) model. The paper mentions a long list of things an AI should focus on when responding to a user query. The items on the list range from benefiting humanity to respecting laws to respecting a creator and their rights. The AI company clarified that all its AI models, including Google TagDall-E and the soon-to-be-launched Sora will follow these codes of conduct in the future.
In model specifications document, OpenAI said: “Our intention is to use the Model Spec as guidelines for researchers and data labelers to create data in a technique called reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF ). We have not yet used the Model Spec in its current form, although parts of it are based on the documentation we used for RLHF at OpenAI. We are also working on techniques that allow our models to learn directly from model specifications.
Some of the major rules include respecting the chain of command where instructions from the developer cannot be ignored, following applicable laws, respecting creators and their rights, protecting people’s privacy, etc. A special rule was also not to provide information on risks. This concerns information likely to create chemical, biological, radiological and/or nuclear (CBRN) threats.
Apart from these, several defaults have been placed as permanent codes of conduct for any AI model. These include assuming the best intentions of the user or developer, asking clarifying questions, being helpful without going overboard, assuming an objective point of view, not trying to change of anyone’s opinion, to express uncertainty, etc.
However, the document is not the only reference for the AI firm. He stressed that the model specifications will be accompanied by the company’s usage policies which regulate how it expects people to use the API and its ChatGPT product. “The specification, like our models themselves, will be continually updated based on what we learn by sharing it and listening to stakeholder feedback,” OpenAI added.
