OpenAI reportedly intends to release its next frontier AI model, named Orion within the company, by December this year. The edge reported Thursday. Unlike previous versions, the company reportedly plans to gradually offer the model to trusted partners before a wider rollout via ChatGPT.
An OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch the report was not accurate but would not elaborate.
The Verge writes that Microsoft engineers expect to have access to Orion as early as November, although it’s unclear what OpenAI will ultimately call the model. The o1 model series was codenamed “strawberry” in OpenAI for months before its release.
A lot depends on the next version of OpenAI’s frontier model. The right AI startup raised $6.6 billion in funding at a valuation of $157 billion, and investors expect OpenAI to continue releasing better and better models to lead the tech world.
