OpenAI has appointed Zico Kolter, professor and chair of the machine learning department at Carnegie Mellon University, to its board of directors, the Microsoft-backed AI startup announced Thursday.
The ChatGPT creator’s board of directors has undergone several changes amid growing concerns about the security of generative artificial intelligence as more companies rush to adopt the burgeoning technology.
Kolter, whose work focuses primarily on AI safety, will also join OpenAI the board’s safety and security committee, alongside CEO Sam Altman and directors Bret Taylor, Adam D’Angelo, Paul Nakasone and Nicole Seligman, the company said.
The Security Committee, established in May, makes recommendations on security and safety decisions for all OpenAI projects.
OpenAI’s chatbots with genAI capabilities such as engaging in human-like conversations and creating images based on text prompts have raised security concerns. AI Models become powerful.
Kolter, formerly Chief Data Scientist at C3.ai, is currently Chief Data Scientist at Bosch and Chief Technical Advisor at Gray Swan, a startup specializing in AI Safety and security.
In 2023, Kolter helped develop methods to automatically assess the security of large language models, demonstrating the potential to bypass existing model protections, according to OpenAI’s blog post.
Microsoft relinquished its observer seat on OpenAI’s board in July, seeking to allay concerns from U.S. and U.K. antitrust regulators about the extent of its control over the startup amid growing adoption of genAI.
