Nvidia on Tuesday defended its tactics in the booming market for artificial intelligence chips amid reports that the United States is investigating whether it abused its influence.
“Nvidia wins on merit, as reflected in our benchmark results and the value added to customers, who can choose the solution that works best for them,” a spokesperson for the Silicon Valley-based chipmaker said in response to an AFP query.
While chip buyers have choices, Nvidia is considered the technology leader in AI chips, even as its competitors work hard to compete.
WE antitrust officials According to a report from Bloomberg and other media outlets, Nvidia is stepping up its investigation to determine whether it has made it difficult for customers to switch to competing GPUs or other chips to power AI.
Legally binding questions have reportedly been sent to Nvidia and other chip companies as part of the US investigation.
The U.S. Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The world’s largest tech companies have invested tens of billions of dollars in Nvidia’s powerful AI chips and software to build and run their ChatGPT-like AI models.
Microsoft, Google, Meta, Tesla, and Amazon all rely on Nvidia technology to train generative AI models and run the heavy computing workloads needed to deploy the new technology.
Nvidia said last week that its quarterly sales hit a better-than-expected $30 billion in the latest quarter, though that impressive growth was slower than the breakneck pace seen in previous quarters.
Nvidia’s stock price fell 8% on Monday as doubts emerged about the resilience of the AI boom in a slowing U.S. economy.
