Unsurprisingly, it was a pretty slow week for enterprise technology given the holidays, but there was still some major AI, chip, and cybersecurity news — and of course, that’s this time of year for predictions, which we began rolling out this week, with more in the weeks to come.
Here is a sample of the most notable news from this last week of the year. And don’t miss Vellante’s weekly in-depth study Breakdown analysis this weekend, when he will assess the fulfillment of his predictions for 2023.
In the meantime, we wish you all a Happy New Year for Business Technology! 🥂

No vacation for AI
Anthropic clearly aims to become OpenAI’s main independent flagship, or at least that’s what its backers are counting on: Generative AI startup Anthropic reportedly on track to generate $850 million in annual revenue
And the big money for AI continues to flow: Defense startup Shield AI raises $300 million at a valuation of $2.8 billion
It’s hard to believe that AI companies hadn’t thought of this, except that Silicon Valley always shoots first and asks questions later, but it could prove costly: The New York Times sues Microsoft and OpenAI for copyright infringement over AI training On the other hand, the arguments are not necessarily as strong, and Mike Masnick at Techdirt that proves that it’s stupid. Still, it seems likely to create a mess that AI companies would rather pay to avoid.
We must not forget that China is making great progress in AI: Baidu reveals rival ChatGPT now has over 100 million users Even though it doesn’t have the latest Nvidia GPUs: Nvidia launches a scaled-down version of its latest gaming GPU in China
And from the WSJ, a worrying subject regarding China’s intentions in terms of AI: China steals AI secrets to boost espionage, US says
