Seven content licensing companies – Rightsify, Global Copyright Exchange (GCX), vAIsual, Calliope Networks, ado, Datarade and Pixta AI – have formed the Dataset Providers Alliance (DPA). This alliance aims to promote “responsible and ethical licensing of intellectual property (IP)” for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) datasets.
According to Press release through the alliance, it aims to defend the rights of content creators in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. He said that to do this, it will work “closely with industry partners, researchers and policy makers to develop standards and recommendations that protect the rights of content creators”.
The concern over AI companies’ use of copyrighted content:
The launch of the alliance comes days after a group of record labels including Universal Music Group, Sony Music and Warner Brothers Music launched an AI music generator AI Suno for alleged copyright infringement. In addition to the lawsuit against Suno AI, several authors And news publications to have has filed legal complaints against OpenAI in the past for using copyrighted materials to train models without the copyright holder’s permission.
All of these lawsuits highlight the tension between rapid advances in AI and protecting creators’ rights. So, if the DPA is indeed able to ensure ethical sourcing, it could be due to the copyright issues that have been flagged in all the lawsuits filed against AI companies.
Other attempts to secure copyright protection for AI training data:
In January of this year, Stability AI’s VP of Audio, spear a nonprofit organization called Fairly Trained, which certifies generative AI companies to use training data practices that respect creators’ rights. The nonprofit launched by certifying nine companies, including Beatoven.AI and Rightsify (which is one of the DPA’s members). To be certified by Fairly Trained, all training data used by a model must comply with the following categories—
- It must be explicitly provided to the developer for training purposes, in accordance with a contractual agreement.
- Available under an open license tailored to the use case
- In the public domain globally
- Fully owned by the model developer
In March, the non-profit association announcement that he had the support of creative groups like The Authors Guild and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).
