SEOUL:An international framework is essential to ensure the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the military, especially for developing countries and the Global South, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin has said.
He stressed the need for this framework due to the substantial disparity in the deployment of AI technology, especially in the military sector.
Mohamed Khaled stressed that the framework should focus on creating constructive pathways to help disadvantaged countries catch up and receive meaningful support.
“The international framework must address potential biases in defining what constitutes ethical and responsible use of AI in the military,” he said during a ministerial roundtable at the Responsible AI in the Military (REAIM) Summit 2024 here today.
He also stressed that the framework must emphasise the importance of establishing a universal and balanced international system.
“Our failure to ensure inclusiveness and universality in defining these fundamental standards and frameworks will result in a biased, exploitative and harmful ecosystem,” he warned.
“We must not be naive and ignore the fact that the definition of what constitutes responsible and ethical use of AI, particularly in the military domain, can be highly political and will be largely influenced by those who have certain geopolitical advantages and interests,” he said.
The REAIM 2024 Summit is hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense of South Korea, in collaboration with the following co-hosts: the Netherlands, Singapore and the United Kingdom.
Malaysia is among 90 countries participating in the summit.
