The tech giant will train its Large Language Models (LLM) using content shared publicly by users in the European Union on platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.
Meanwhile, the company also began using public posts from Facebook and Instagram to train aspects of its new Meta AI virtual assistant. However, it deliberately excludes private posts shared only with family and friends to protect users’ privacy, in accordance with European privacy laws.
In a report, Stefano Fratta, the company’s director of global engagement, explained: “As Europe stands on the threshold of society’s next major technological shift, some activists are advocating extreme approaches to data and ‘AI. Let’s be clear: these positions do not reflect European law and amount to an argument that Europeans should not have access to – or be properly served by – AI like the rest of the world. We strongly disagree with this result.
“As one of the most influential regions in the world, Europe has the potential to become a competitive leader in AI innovation. But questions remain: will Europeans have equal access to revolutionary AI? Will AI experiences reflect our culture, humor and history? Or does Europe want to see the rest of the world benefit from truly innovative technology that builds community and drives growth?
He added: “AI is the next frontier of innovation. We are living through one of the most exciting technological moments in a generation, where advancements are happening before our eyes and the possibilities are endless. And at Meta, we want Europeans to be part of it.”
