The updated label is a response to the use of AI to edit and manipulate images, in addition to generating them.

New Delhi: Meta has evolved its “Made with AI” label to an “AI info” label, which provides additional contextual information about how AI tools were used to produce the image. Meta had previously introduced the “Made with AI” label after the proliferation of content on Instagram, Threads, and Facebook that was created using generative AI tools. Meta has now realized the need to provide additional detail, given that there are AI tools that also allow for image editing and manipulation, rather than simply generating new images from text prompts.
The changes are being implemented based on recommendations from Meta’s oversight board, as well as a policy review process that includes public opinion surveys and expert consultations. Meta is working closely with the industry to develop the signals it uses to recognize content created using AI. Meta is expected to label a broader range of audio, video and image content with the new label. Meta also acknowledged that its existing labels were not in line with public expectations.
For example, there were editing tools that made minor changes to images using AI. These images were labeled with the “Made by AI” tag, which was not true and did not give the full picture. Meta’s new approach is more transparent and provides its users with additional information when necessary.
The “Made with AI” label
Meta introduced the “Made with AI” label in April, after the proliferation of generative AI content on its platforms. Before these generative AI tools became common, CGI was rare on the platforms, with the labeling only required for videos created or edited to make a person believe they’re not saying something. At the time, fake videos were the primary concern. A more prominent label was applied to content that Meta deemed likely to mislead its audience.
