LG AI Research marked a milestone by becoming the first organization in South Korea to be recognized as an AI ethics evaluator and certifier by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association (IEEE SA). This positions LG AI Research at the forefront of global AI ethics, establishing the foundation for ethical AI practices that meet international standards.
On September 23, LG AI Research announced that it had signed an official agreement with IEEE SA, officially securing its status as a partner organization with IEEE CertifAIEd (Certified AI Ethics). IEEE SA, an internationally renowned certification body for technology standardization, manages more than 2,100 international projects supported by more than 34,000 experts in 175 countries.
Through the IEEE CertifAIEd certification program, LG AI Research will contribute to the development of ethical and trustworthy AI technologies, focusing on key areas such as transparency, algorithmic bias, privacy and accountability. These standards are essential as AI continues to rapidly evolve and the need for verification, evaluation and standardization guidelines increases.
As part of its mission to create a trusted AI ecosystem, LG AI Research will initially apply the certification program to AI products and services of LG subsidiaries, as well as their global partners, ensuring that their technologies respect international ethical standards. The institute will also introduce AI ethics training programs to foster a deeper understanding of AI ethical practices among developers and users.
Alpesh Shah, Director General of IEEE SA, highlighted the importance of this collaboration: “IEEE has been instrumental in addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by AI through its ongoing work ranging from pre-standardization to compliance and certification. AI-related work at UNESCO and OECD reflecting the importance of designing and implementing solutions that consider people and planet, as well as the collective future and our generations future. LG’s demonstrated commitment to integrating and adhering to the IEEE Global Principles. The AI Ethics certification program for all of its product lines, as a means of demonstrating their commitment, shows the seriousness with which they take their share of responsibility. »
Bae Kyounghoon, President of LG AI Research, highlighted the company’s dedication: “As Korea’s first IEEE-authorized collaborator for the AI ethics certification program, we want to help improve accountability and transparency of AI so that it can develop in ways that provide beneficial value to humans and society and respect human rights.
LG AI Research has been active in international AI ethics initiatives by partnering last year with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to raise awareness of AI ethics and joining the UNESCO Business Council, an international private sector AI ethics organization. Additionally, LG AI Research became the only South Korean company to participate in the “AI Election Compact,” aimed at preventing the misuse of AI technologies, such as deepfakes.
Through these ongoing efforts, LG AI Research continues to consolidate its role as a global leader in AI ethics, ensuring that AI development complies with international standards and contributes positively to society.
