HIROSHIMA, Japan, July 10, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Today, at the AI Ethics for Peace: World Religions Commit to Responding to the Rome Call event, IBM (NYSE: IBM) reaffirmed its leadership and commitment to the Rome Call for AI Ethics. Organized by the Vatican Renaissance Foundation, in collaboration with the Pontifical Academy of Life, Religions for Peace Japan, United Arab Emirates’ Abu Dhabi Peace Forum and the Chief Rabbinate of Israel Commission for Interfaith Relations, this latest meeting for the Rome Call welcomes the co-signature of Eastern religious leaders and seeks to shape technological progress to support human progress and inspire peaceful collaboration and global unity for the ethical development of AI, the document’s core tenet.
This interfaith event follows a series of landmark Rome Call events in which IBM played a significant role – being one of the first signatories of the return call in February 2020to lead the Rome Call for AI Ethics World University Summithosted by University of Notre Dame and including 40 educational establishments in 2022, at the Signature 2023 of the call of the three Abrahamic religions – Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
“AI is a technology that impacts every country, every industry, and every value system. Its benefits are expected to impact all of humanity. IBM is proud to once again renew its commitment to the Rome Call for AI Ethics, now with new like-minded Eastern religious leaders,” said Darío Gil, IBM senior vice president and chief research officer. “It is critical that we deliver on our commitments. Through initiatives like the Rome Call and the AI Alliance, we are uniting developers, researchers, industry leaders, and advocates to seamlessly advance responsible AI rooted in open innovation.”
As a long-time advocate for the ethical development of AI, IBM has worked with organizations around the world to ensure that powerful technologies, like AI, are created responsibly and ethically from the start. In 2018, IBM introduced its Trust and Transparency Principles and was one of the first companies to create an AI Ethics Board as an internal governance instrument around AI ethics, which includes processes, tools, guidelines, training, and risk assessment to oversee the company’s AI development and use practices, as well as partnering with many AI stakeholders to advance AI ethics in a practical, collaborative, and inclusive environment.
IBM’s ethical approach to AI is embedded throughout the company, including in its products and platforms such as Watson X and through IBM’s AI and data governance assets and risk management solutions, reflecting the maturity of the company’s journey and the clear vision of IBM and its clients. This approach is also used to develop GraniteIBM’s family of large language models. These solutions and models reflect the maturity of IBM’s journey and vision for its clients.
In addition, in December 2023IBM co-founded the AI Alliancewhich today brings together more than 100 companies, startups, educational institutions, government agencies and research labs from around the world. The Alliance focuses on accelerating open source innovation to improve trust in AI and responsibly maximize its benefits for people and society in an inclusive manner.
The Alliance aims to develop a differentiated approach to developing new AI tuning techniques that are cultural and societal, and to create a more accessible and democratized approach to AI development, with the skills and education needed to move the sector forward. It will seek to establish more than just guidelines on use, but rather concrete pathways to building AI systems that advance and improve our daily lives. The goal is to transform AI users into AI co-creators, so that everyone can maintain full autonomy and control over the use of AI. This is in line with the principles of the Rome Call for AI Ethics, which emphasize inclusion, rights, and responsibility.
