On December 12 and 13, 2024, the AI4HER APAC Conference took place in Seoul, in the conference room of the Hanyang Institute of Technology. He has focused on promoting ethical and human-centered applications of artificial intelligence, emphasizing and fostering diversity and inclusion, particularly in empowering women in AI-related fields to navigate rapidly evolving technology. It also aimed to equip women with knowledge and skills in AI, thereby preparing participants for the challenges and opportunities of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The conference and concurrent workshops brought together industry professionals, academics, and policymakers to discuss topics including fairness in AI, responsible AI innovation, and human-centered design. Additionally, he has supported initiatives from organizations such as Women in AI (WAI) Australia. It was a great platform to network and explore cutting-edge ideas in AI, while contributing to a meaningful cause with proceeds from ticket sales funding other events and programs. This was a forward-looking event held at the conference hall of Hanyang Institute of Technology (HIT) in Seoul, South Korea. The two-day conference focused on ethical and human-centered applications of artificial intelligence.
Participants from around the world discussed and spoke, focusing on human-centered AI by exploring AI technologies designed to prioritize societal benefits, fairness and ethical use , as well as responsible AI practices that address topics like transparent algorithms, accountability, and preventing bias in AI models. Furthermore, the conference emphasized the importance of Empowering womenhighlighting the importance of equipping women with the knowledge, tools and skills to excel in the AI and technology sectors. And, by providing a collaboration and networking platform for interaction between industry experts, academics and government leaders to share innovations, policies and research, the conference was a success.
Pressenza Press had the chance to have a conversation with one of the presenters, Jeanne Lim, Ph.D., CEO and co-founder of beingAIa company focused on creating AI beings designed to foster meaningful, human-like interactions. These AI beings aim to be accessible across multiple platforms, providing support, companionship and empathy, creating more personal and engaging experiences with artificial intelligence.
His presentation entitled “Wiser decisions with AI’captivated audiences with his philosophical and applicable vision of wisdom in the potentially challenging AI era. It highlighted different views on Western and Eastern philosophies on wisdom expressed by various world-renowned religions and philosophers, sharing their views over the centuries. She explained in a beautiful and meaningful way that a view of Indian philosophy affirms the importance of self-awareness, knowing oneself as the truth and basis of creation. Pluralism – the ability to hold two opposing points of view in one’s mind simultaneously, without having bias towards anyone until a conclusion is reached. Harmony and Balance – living in a balanced environment by optimizing natural light, airflow and thermal balance called Vastu Shastra, an ancient Indian architectural system that uses design principles to create positive energy in a space.
She says we need to address the issue of alignment now. Does AI align with our individual and societal values? How can we be assured that he will make the “right” decisions? The questions we need to ask about AI alignment – aligned with which humans? Based on what values? Applied in what context?
She strongly advised participants that to ensure AI agents are aligned with human values, we must elevate human wisdom.
She went on to say that AI can help us make smarter decisions and collect, summarize and analyze large amounts of data. It identifies and generates ideas from deep, hidden patterns, is less susceptible to mental afflictions, and merges broad perspectives. It is consistent, in the face of changing circumstances, to be available 24/7, anywhere, anytime to promote positive habits and behaviors.
Additionally, AI can help children make smarter decisions when faced with dilemmas and can help us decide to be kinder to each other, turning conflict into non-conflict, a new term that brings restoring peace to communities using the Non-conflict path. Jeanne hopes that AI can help increase the achievement of enlightened wisdom by humans and AI by collaborating and co-evolving to achieve wisdom at scale.
Prior to joining BeingAI, Jeanne was CEO and CMO of Hanson Robotics, where she played a central role in the development of Sophia the Robot, one of the most famous humanoid robots known for its human-like appearance and interactions. Jeanne’s background includes over 25 years of business management and technology marketing experience, with leadership roles at major companies like Apple, Cisco, Dell and Danaher. His expertise extends to launching innovative products and focusing on user-centered design and technology.
In addition to her business achievements, Jeanne is passionate about integrating wisdom and ethical considerations into the development of AI. His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Integrated and Holistic Health, an MBA from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley.
