Feeling inspired to write your first TDS article before the end of 2024? We are always open to contributions from new authors.
And suddenly, 2024 is (almost) in the books. It has been a year of exciting transitions – both for the TDS team and, in many meaningful ways, for the data science, machine learning, and AI communities as a whole. We would like to thank you all – readers, authors and subscribers – for your support and for keeping us busy and engaged with your excellent contributions and comments.
Unlike 2023, where a single event (the launch of ChatGPT just weeks before the start of the year) stopped everyone in their tracks and shaped conversations for months, this year we experienced a sense of transformation more cumulative and fragmented. Practitioners from industry and academia have been experimenting with new tools and working hard to find innovative ways to benefit from the rapid growth of LLMs; At the same time, they’ve also had to navigate a challenging job market and a world where AI’s footprint is moving ever closer to their own daily workflows.
To help you understand these developments, we published more than 3,500 articles last year, including hundreds by new contributors. Our authors have an incredible talent for injecting their unique perspective into any topic they tackle (from big questions and hot topics to more focused technical challenges) and we’re proud of every article we’ve published in 2024.
Within this massive creative production, certain articles manage to resonate particularly well with our readers, and we dedicate our latest Variable edition to them: our most read, discussed and shared articles of the year. As you would expect, they cover a lot field, we therefore decided to organize them according to the major themes that we detected this year: learning and building from scratch, RAG and AI agents, career development, as well as breakthroughs and ‘innovation.
We hope you enjoy discovering our 2024 highlights and we wish you a relaxing end to the year — see you in January!
