Ned Luke, the voice behind Grand Theft Auto 5’s Michael De Santa, sparked fury against a company by using his voice for an unofficial AI chatbot. Luke called out the “scam” built on a “lame computer estimate” of his voice, urging fans not to “waste their time” with this “rubbish”.
The actor’s explosive social media response tagged the company, Rockstar Games, fellow voice actor Roger Clark, and even the actors’ union. WAME, the Web3 company behind the bot, quickly erased all traces of its platforms.
Gamelade tin game – In a damage control statement, WAME acknowledged its “deep understanding and concern” over the controversy. They claimed that the AI’s voice, although based on Luke’s, was a unique “independent creation” and not intended for commercial use. They apologized for any distress caused and pledged to learn from this “crucial moment” to balance AI ethics and legal rights.
The incident sparked a heated debate over the ethical use of AI and the rights of creators. Luke’s outburst echoed concerns about the potential misuse of voices and likenesses in the age of advanced AI. WAME’s backpedaling and apology, while seemingly sincere, leaves lingering questions about their future AI efforts.
One thing is clear: this is not a side mission in GTA. The line between creative freedom and ethical boundaries has become blurred, leaving the industry grappling with the consequences. Whether WAME’s “pivotal moment” will lead to meaningful change remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Ned Luke will not be silenced when it comes to protecting his voice and the rights of his fellow creators.
