Apple’s AI may be delayed, but Google is moving full speed ahead with its own AI. Ahead of Google’s August 13 hardware event, Android Police covered some leaks hinting at some software-centric announcements surrounding the upcoming debut of the Google Pixel 9Leaks suggest that the smartphone will get new AI-powered features as well as new extensions for an enhanced Gemini experience.
On the Gemini side, Google is hard at work putting the Google Assistant out to pasture in favor of the newcomer to the market. The company is working to better integrate Gemini into Google Home. In its current version, Gemini will pass commands from the home page to Assistant. However, a few new extensions should address this bottleneck and bring some quality-of-life improvements. A deep dive into the Google app beta v15.29.34.29 reveals a Phone extension that will give Gemini the ability to make calls using the app. Other extensions will create calendar events and take notes through Gemini, while another addition will let the AI adjust volume, launch apps, and take photos.
These are likely some of the features Google will announce during the Pixel 9’s big reveal. Tech journalist and software engineer Dylan Rousell recently leaked “Call Notes.” If the leak is accurate, this AI-powered feature will be integrated into the Phone app. It will have the ability to record and transcribe calls, similar to the Pixel 8’s Recorder app, but could potentially go further with call summaries.
Finally, it is also rumored that Google will announce a redesigned panorama mode to please fans of the PhotoSphere mode which was recently disabled.
