KARACHI:
Regulatory policies and strict rules against misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) could ensure a responsible and ethical technology culture among Pakistani youth, say AI coaches and entrepreneurs. They add that local bright young people could fully exploit AI to earn money remotely through hands-on projects. They emphasize that it is high time to establish such rules, as AI is rapidly penetrating all fields and sectors.
Sharing their views with The Express Tribune, they said preventing young people from misusing AI is crucial and needs to be approached from three prongs. First, comprehensive educational programs should raise awareness of ethical implications and consequences, with the goal of preventing young people from relying on AI technologies like ChatGPT for ready-made answers to homework questions. Second, it is essential to foster an environment that values originality and critical thinking, promoting honest academic practices. Finally, it is advisable to implement advanced plagiarism detection and monitoring tools, leveraging technology to maintain authenticity.
“Addressing concerns about fake AI-generated content is critical. I advocate a regulatory approach that promotes innovation while managing risks. We propose measures such as mandatory disclosure, ethical guidelines and user awareness initiatives, as well as collaboration with the technology industry. It is crucial to find a balance to prevent harm without hindering the positive impact of AI in sectors like education and healthcare. It is imperative to engage diverse stakeholders in a consultative process to effectively adapt regulations to Pakistan’s unique landscape, promoting responsible AI practices and transparency,” said the entrepreneur and technology expert Salman Lakhani, who is also the founder and CEO of Cubix.

Lakhani highlights that local bright young people can fully leverage AI to earn money remotely through hands-on projects. In marketing, AI tools can be used to leverage data and create personalized campaigns that really hit the mark. When it comes to graphic design, one can experiment with AI-based graphic design platforms. For technology enthusiasts, diving into the world of automation and AI-driven data processing in software development can be very rewarding. He highlighted the importance of young Pakistani talents to enroll in online courses, actively engage in AI communities and contribute to real-world projects. By developing a versatile skill set, staying up to date on industry trends, and delivering AI-powered solutions on independent platforms, recent graduates can access numerous remote opportunities, allowing them to thrive in the dynamic digital landscape of Pakistan.
“Discouraging the misuse of AI among young people requires a multifaceted approach, including focusing on ethical education, promoting digital literacy and implementing technological safeguards. By adopting these strategies, educators, policymakers and communities can work together to ensure that AI technologies such as ChatGPT are leveraged to enhance young people’s learning and creativity, rather than diminish the value of authentic academic effort,” said Noman Said, CEO of SI Global Solutions.
Said emphasized that new graduates can effectively learn and hone their AI skills from home by leveraging a wealth of online resources and self-directed learning strategies. These include online courses and tutorials, open source projects, competitive programs, online forums and communities, research articles and blogs, personal projects, webinars and workshops, YouTube channels , podcasts and audiobooks. By combining these resources with a disciplined and motivated learning approach, new graduates can significantly improve their AI skills from home, he said, adding that it is important to set clear learning goals, maintain a regular study schedule and actively seek feedback and collaborative opportunities to maximize the learning experience.
Meanwhile, other IT and AI trainers highlight the need for strict regulatory oversight to mitigate the proliferation of counterfeit media content in Pakistan’s booming IT sector. As AI technologies evolve, they become increasingly adept at generating misleading video, audio, and text, posing significant challenges to information integrity and national security. They emphasize that implementing such measures is imperative to ensure responsible use of AI, protect citizens from digital disinformation, and ensure the integrity of the digital landscape in Pakistan.
