“Deus ex machina,” or “God out of the machine,” was a theatrical convention developed in ancient Greece in which characters were extracted from impossible situations through an unexpected stratagem.
Indeed, actors playing the gods would be brought on stage, from above or below, to “save” the hero.
Sometimes artificial intelligence is presented this way.
This is the cure for all the ills of modern man: we will finally get our time back and we will no longer even need to think!
Despite all the benefits that AI brings to law firm owners, there are still some important cautions that lawyers should be keenly aware of.
Joyce Brafford of ProfitSolv is back on NonEventcast — as co-host of this special episode series — to discuss the intersection of legal ethics and AI. We discuss recent ethical guidance on lawyers’ use of AI and how it translates into everyday legal practice.
This is the sixth episode in a special podcast series, with a new episode each month, hosted in collaboration with our partner, ProfitSolv. This episode is sponsored by Time solving solution.
In this episode, the co-hosts begin, as always, by describing a new pair of imaginary beasts in “Cryptid Corner.”
After that, the duo goes way back – to start a discussion about the (actually long) history of AI… which may have been around longer than you think (10:39).
Next, we review different types of AI, as there are more than just the generative tools (like ChatGPT) that most people are familiar with (12:07).
Following this discussion, Joyce addresses some of the limitations of using AI in the legal space and the danger of implicit bias within the systems themselves (14:48).
There’s also a recent joint ethics opinion on AI in the legal field, issued by the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia bar associations, which Joyce gave us an overview of (19:17). Then we dove into some case law on AI “hallucinations,” when these tools are actually legal cases. (28:32)
Next, we discussed specific strategies for evaluating legal tech products that offer AI capabilities (33:26).
Last but certainly not least, Joyce touched on some of the cool things ProfitSolv companies are doing when it comes to adding AI product features (36:20).
If you think AI would be a really useful thing to implement in your legal practice, but you’re worried about staying on the right side of the legal ethics issue, listen to this special edition of the Non-Eventcast podcast to learn how to toe the line.
