The migration allowed CHS to consolidate its data into a centralized view and apply Google Cloud’s generation AI capabilities to help drive administrative efficiency and improve the patient experience.
SUNNYVALE, California. And FRANKLIN, Tenn., January 31, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Community Health Systems, Inc. (NYSE: CYH), one of the nation’s leading healthcare companies, and Google Cloud today announced that CHS has completed the migration to a clinical data platform based on Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources 1 (FHIR) and is implementing is now implementing new innovations in generative AI (gen AI) using Google Cloud. technologies.
The FHIR standard defines how health information can be exchanged between different IT systems, regardless of how it is stored in those systems. By consolidating this data into a centralized, secure FHIR-based cloud platform, CHS has made it easier for healthcare professionals to find the information they need and understand the organization’s clinical and operational metrics.
The cloud and data migration effort will also allow CHS to accelerate the adoption of next-generation AI technologies that will help clinicians and other employees more easily interact with data and interpret results, including including near real-time dashboards that track key operational areas such as surgeries. and emergency rooms. Since completing the migration to Google Cloud, CHS has already improved data transparency across its organization and seen improvements in quality, results and operations.
“The goal of this migration goes well beyond modernizing our data infrastructure,” said Miguel S. Benet, MD, senior vice president of clinical operations at Community Health Systems. “By establishing a secure foundation to leverage new AI innovations, we are able to streamline the workflow of our clinical providers and advance the way we deliver patient care.” »
With 71 affiliated hospitals in 15 states, CHS had data scattered across many locations and formats. Accessing the data was cumbersome and required tedious research from different sources. CHS needed a holistic view of its medical records and turned to the Google Cloud Health Data Platform to help it consolidate its patient data into standard, secure FHIR formats that enable interoperability between its clinical systems. CHS can also now leverage BigQuery, Google Cloud’s data warehouse solution, to present a complete picture of patient data and generate real-time insights such as bed capacity and other operational metrics.
Through this centralized data repository, CHS is currently implementing new Google Cloud gen AI technologies, including Vertex AI, and large language models to further increase administrative efficiency and improve patient outcomes . Implementing gen AI tools will free up time and allow healthcare professionals to focus on high-value interactions with patients. Key ways CHS is looking to deploy Generation AI include:
- Distill and disseminate large amounts of complex data: Deploy generation AI to improve clinical documentation and help capture the complexity of care.
- Automation of administrative tasks: Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform will help automate administrative tasks, such as helping a user generate a denial appeal letter, based on a set of predetermined criteria.
- Providing patients with concise and contextualized information to improve social determinants of health: Using Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform and Google Maps capabilities, CHS-affiliated hospitals will be able to provide discharged patients with a list of resources in their communities personalized to their needs.
