As innovations in artificial intelligence (AI) begin to reshape people’s daily lives, Chinese smartphone makers have accelerated the development of AI phones, showcasing Chinese companies’ research and development efforts ( independent R&D) in cutting-edge technologies.
Smartphone maker Meizu announced on Sunday that it would stop developing and marketing old-style mobile phones and was ready for “All in AI”.
The company said it has an advantage in hardware and software development and will focus on producing new AI-led devices.
On the same day, OPPO CEO Chen Mingyong released an internal letter claiming that 2024 is the first year of AI phones. “In the next five years, the impact of AI on the mobile phone industry may be quite comparable to the year when smartphones replaced feature phones,” Chen noted.
Chen said AI mobile phones could become the third stage of the mobile phone industry after feature phones and smartphones, noting that AI technology supported by large language models is reshaping the industry some information.
From the launch of a voice assistant to AI photo recognition, to the release of AndesGPT in 2023, OPPO has been building its latest AI applications during the Spring Festival holiday. Chen said the company has established an AI center focused on AI innovations.
In November, smartphone company Vivo launched its large BlueLM language model, which it developed itself. A month later, the Vivo S18 series, equipped with AI function, was officially launched.
“AI technology is developing rapidly, and the smartphone has become one of the most commonly used electronic devices in people’s daily lives. Therefore, the integration of AI technology into mobile phones can provide users with smarter and more convenient services,” Wang Peng, an associate researcher at the Beijing Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times on Sunday.
Wang noted that China has made remarkable progress in mobile phone manufacturing and R&D, and the rise of AI technology provides new opportunities for Chinese mobile phone manufacturing.
The application scenarios of AI phones can cover all aspects of people’s daily lives. For example, an AI mobile phone can be used as the central controller of a smart home to realize intelligent control of home appliances through voice recognition, image recognition and other technologies.
In healthcare, AI-enabled mobile phones can help users monitor their health and provide quick, personalized health advice, Wang said.
“Although there is still a gap in China’s AI development compared with international giants, with the continuous progress of technology and the growth of market demand, Chinese mobile phone manufacturers are expected to make more breakthroughs in AI technology and launch more innovative and competitive AI mobile phones. products,” noted the expert.
