Shenzhen, China’s technology hub, announced on Wednesday a series of measures including the provision of “vouchers” respectively for research and development of artificial intelligence (AI) models, and AI training and corpus, with proof for model training of up to 500 million yuan. ($68 million) per year for businesses.
According to the various measures for Shenzhen to build an artificial intelligence pioneer city, released by the Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Industry and Information Technology, they serve to “build the national new generation of artificial intelligence pilot zone”. innovation and development of AI and the national zone of innovation and application of AI. pilot area and build an AI pioneer city.
For “good AI models”, the measures indicate that an annual maximum of 100 million yuan will be given to companies to reduce application costs.
For companies that provide model services and develop applications based on generative AI models registered with the National Internet Information Bureau, those that reach a certain scale and demonstrate good results can receive funding of up to 2 million yuan, not exceeding 30% of the purchase price of the model. costs.
An annual maximum of 500 million yuan in “training vouchers” will be issued to reduce the costs of research and training of AI models.
For enterprises, higher education institutions and research institutes that rent intelligent computing power for training large models, a subsidy of up to 10 million yuan will be provided, covering no more than 50% of the amount of the service contract. For start-ups, the subsidy rate will be increased to 60 percent, according to the measures.
In addition, an annual maximum of 50 million yuan of “corpus vouchers” will be issued to promote the open sharing and exchange of corpora, and to advance the construction of a data item market.
The metrics also support the real-world application of AI products. Companies that reach a certain sales volume for their best-selling products each year, including AI computers, AI smartphones and smart wearable devices, will receive up to 3 million yuan.
The city of Shenzhen has been at the forefront of AI, fostering the development of new quality productive forces. Amid Sino-US technological competition, the city has taken the initiative to support the emergence of industrial examples in the field of AI, said Liu Wei, director of the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory and of cognitive engineering at Beijing University of Posts and Sciences. Telecommunications, told the Global Times on Wednesday.
“The goal is to achieve tangible AI applications that are visible to all. In essence, Shenzhen’s move aims to speed up this process,” Liu said.
After China’s artificial intelligence experienced “AI model competition war”, “price war” and fierce technological competition in 2024, China’s AI development next year will be more focused on applications, said Yin Zhi, chief consultant of Shanghai Artificial Intelligence. Technology Association, told China Enterprise Journal.
Liu told the Global Times that some AI models of American companies have various illusions and unreliable characteristics, indicating that there are still huge opportunities for Chinese AI companies to capture market share. .
