AI systems are becoming increasingly common in devices, applications and services aimed at children. Concern over a world where AI systems are deployed unchecked has raised burning questions about the impact, governance and accountability of these technologies. Although recent efforts on AI ethics have converged toward a growing consensus on a set of high-level ethical principles for AI, engagement with children’s issues is still limited, and much is known even less on how to apply them effectively in practice for children. This Perspective first maps the current global landscape of existing ethical guidelines for AI and analyzes their correlation with children. We then critically evaluate the strategies and recommendations proposed by current AI ethics initiatives, identifying critical challenges in putting these AI ethical principles into practice for children. Finally, we tentatively offer several suggestions regarding the integration of ethics into the development and governance of AI for children.
