Texas AG Reaches Settlement in Healthcare AI Probe
In other legal news, the attorney general of Texas has reached a settlement with a Dallas health AI company that the government accuses of making false claims about the accuracy and safety of its products before deploying them to Texas hospitals. The company, called Piecessells generative AI technology that it says provides clinicians with summaries of patient conditions and treatment. The AG concluded that Pieces’ accuracy measurements and its claims of a relatively low rate of hallucinations were themselves inaccurate. Learn more.
Can AI reduce fraud, waste and abuse?
A study in NEJM catalyst suggests that Using AI to screen medical claims for fraud, waste and abuse could reduce erroneous charges. In analysis conducted by several employees of a health analytics company Health on a large scale and personalized health technology platform Personify health and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Michigan, the authors report that the AI analysis detected nearly $12 million in inappropriate claims before they were paid, or about 1.2% of total spending on nearly 300,000 claims. The technology, sold by Health at Scale, requested medical records for patients whose claims had been reported to ensure “alignment of medical services and interventions with established medical care guidelines and standards.
