As part of the vision of Making AI in India and Making AI Work for India, the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi approved the IndiaAI Global Mission at the national level with a budgetary outlay of Rs. 10,371.92 crore.
The IndiaAI Mission will establish a comprehensive ecosystem catalyzing AI innovation through strategic programs and partnerships across the public and private sectors. By democratizing access to computing, improving data quality, developing local AI capabilities, attracting top AI talent, enabling industrial collaboration, providing early-stage venture capital, ensuring social impact AI projects and strengthening ethical AI will promote responsible and inclusive growth of the Indian AI ecosystem.
The mission will be implemented by the Independent Business Division (IBD) “IndiaAI” under Digital India Corporation (DIC) and includes the following:
IndianAI computing capacity: The IndiaAI compute pillar will build a high-end scalable AI computing ecosystem to meet the growing demands of AI start-ups and the rapidly expanding research ecosystem in India. The ecosystem will include AI computing infrastructure of 10,000 or more graphics processing units (GPUs), built through a public-private partnership. Additionally, an AI marketplace will be designed to offer AI as a service and pre-trained models to AI innovators. It will act as a one-stop solution for resources critical to AI innovation.
IndiaAI Innovation Center: The IndiaAI Innovation Center will undertake the development and deployment of large indigenous multi-modal models (LMMs) and domain-specific foundational models in critical sectors.
IndiaAI Dataset Platform – The IndiaAI Dataset Platform will streamline access to quality non-personal data sets for AI innovation. A unified data platform will be developed to provide a single solution for seamless access to non-personal data sets to Indian startups and researchers.
IndiaAI Application Development Initiative – IndiaAI Application Development Initiative will promote AI applications in critical sectors for problem statements from central ministries, state departments and other institutions. The initiative will focus on developing/scaling/promoting the adoption of impactful AI solutions with the potential to catalyze large-scale socio-economic transformation.
IndiaAI FutureSkills – IndiaAI FutureSkills is designed to alleviate barriers to entry into AI programs and will increase AI courses at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels. programs. Additionally, data and AI labs will be set up in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities across India to impart foundation level courses.
IndiaAI startup funding: The IndiaAI Startup Financing pillar is designed to support and accelerate high-tech AI startups and provide them with streamlined access to financing to enable futuristic AI projects.
Safe and reliable AI – Recognizing the need for adequate safeguards to advance the responsible development, deployment and adoption of AI, the Safe and Trusted AI pillar will enable the implementation of responsible AI projects, including the development of indigenous tools and frameworks, self-assessment checklists for innovators, and other governance guidelines and frameworks.
The approved IndiaAI mission will propel innovation and build national capabilities to ensure India’s technological sovereignty. This will also create high-skilled employment opportunities to harness the country’s demographic dividend. The IndiaAI mission will help India demonstrate to the world how this transformative technology can be used for social good and improve its global competitiveness.
