Artificial intelligence (AI) is dominating technology news as organizations look to leverage technology to improve efficiency and support key areas such as customer service and cybersecurity.
Companies have been applying machine learning (ML) for years to establish a baseline of a normal operating environment and then distinguish malicious activity from harmless anomalies. Today, with the growing importance of generative AI, discussions are growing about how to use the technology to improve threat intelligence, workflow and incident response. At the same time, there is some nervousness about the integrity of AI results. There are also questions around the topic of bad actors using AI as an offensive weapon.
AI and Cybersecurity Survey
The Cloud Security Alliance and Google Cloud surveyed 2,486 IT professionals to take the temperature of the use of AI in cybersecurity. Most (63%) believe AI will help them improve threat detection and mitigation. That said, there is some caution and concern about AI technology falling into the wrong hands. Some 31% believe that AI equally helps the business and the cybercriminals who seek to hack it. Additionally, 25% believe malicious actors will benefit more from AI than the organizations they attack.
Top AI concerns include data quality issues (38%), which could interfere with the accuracy of the data produced. Nearly a third (30%) said they expect AI to enrich their cybersecurity skills. Around 28% of them look forward to AI providing additional support in their role. Another 24% see AI as a way to automate some of their job functions. Only 12% fear that AI will replace workers. Half worry about becoming too dependent on AI, highlighting the need to balance technology with human experience.
Lack of balance in knowledge
There is a lack of balance in AI knowledge within the workforce. While 52% of all senior executives boast a deep knowledge of AI, only 11% of the general staff can make this claim. Most – 74% – trust their leaders to make constructive decisions on AI.
Mandates around AI are definitely generated at the top. Some 82% say AI projects are generated at the executive level.
