AI has the potential to personalize education, providing immediate feedback that helps students learn better, teachers teach better, and schools become more effective. AI can also help students think critically, by providing explanations or evaluating competing arguments. But to deliver better educational outcomes, career opportunities, and civic engagement for all, countries must address digital divides and prevent AI from amplifying bias or eroding data protection.
As AI surpasses humans in an increasing number of skill areas, the OECD is developing a detailed and authoritative methodology to assess the capabilities of AI and robotics relative to humans, to guide policymakers in adapting education and training. As the world – and learning – becomes increasingly digital, we will provide policymakers with a set of opportunities, guidelines and safeguards for the effective and equitable use of AI in education.
