Apple to take longer to deliver AI features in iOS 18
Apple’s iOS 18 update will be released alongside the iPhone 16 launch in September, but the most important AI features will come later.
Apple’s much-awaited AI features are facing delays. According to new reports, the company was likely to announce iOS 18 AI features with the iPhone 16 series in September. But now, Apple’s AI features will only roll out with the iOS 18.1 update which is expected to roll out in October this year.
Bloomberg’s report states that the delay will primarily help Apple fix potential bugs in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 releases, via the developer and beta program over the coming weeks.
Apple Intelligence Delay for iPhone 16 – Does it Matter?
Apple has seen rivals Google and Microsoft take a head start with their AI tools and features. iOS 18 was unveiled at WWDC 2024 in June, and the world got a closer look at the potential of the company’s Apple Intelligence or AI.
AI features have been met with both praise and criticism, with both Google and Microsoft facing public and critical ire. Apple will likely want to avoid major missteps of its own and ensure that the AI is not only accurate but also delivers on its promise to protect data.
Given recent events, it would be better for Apple to delay the AI update for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 than to deliver a half-baked update that causes more problems for the company than it gets people excited about the future.
That said, we’ll know more about the quality and performance of these AI features when the developer version of iOS 18 is released in the coming days, and after that, more iPhone users will get a sneak peek with the beta.
