- Many companies regularly hire marketing interns to take on multiple responsibilities.
- However, with the proliferation of artificial intelligence in most departments and industries, how will this impact the hiring of marketing interns? GetApp recently conducted a study to find the answers.
Many companies hire marketing interns to handle various tasks and responsibilities. These internships help companies hire talented people and provide valuable hands-on experience for emerging marketing professionals. However, with the growing popularity of artificial intelligence (AI) taking over multiple tasks, the future of marketing interns is in question.
GetApp recently conducted a study to understand the impact of AI on hiring marketing interns. Here are some key takeaways from the study.
SMEs maintain demand for marketing interns this year
One of the key findings of the study is that AI does not appear to affect the demand for marketing interns much in 2024. In contrast to AI’s impact on the overall job market, the study found that internship roles would remain stable this year. Among small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) that hire, coordinate, or work directly with interns, 63% plan to take on the same number of interns this year as in 2023. Nearly 30% plan to hire more. Additionally, 36% of respondents also believed that AI would increase demand for interns this year, while only 12% believed it would reduce demand.

Data analysis skills combined with AI are vital for marketing interns this year
The study also found that more companies appear interested in hiring interns with AI experience as the technology grows in importance. About 42% of respondents said their organization was specifically looking for AI skills or experience when considering hiring an intern. Additionally, 71% believe their organization would pay more for interns with AI experience or skills. Around 77% of respondents also believe that AI has fundamentally changed the qualifications and skills required of marketing interns in the coming times.
As more companies of all sizes and industries integrate AI, the technology can help trainees continue their educational development and improve their skills.
According to SMEs, data analytics is considered a very useful application of AI, as it can accelerate the processing and interpretation of data. When it comes to marketing tasks where SMBs prefer interns to benefit most from AI help, these include data analysis (48%), reducing errors (42%), and improving the efficiency or speed of processes and workflows (36%).
This feeling continues as companies assess what AI knowledge and skills interns should have to succeed this year.

It has become imperative for companies to consider AI skills when hiring interns. Incorporating AI skills into internship positions will enrich interns’ learning experiences and prepare the company for the future. Some key AI skills to consider when interviewing interns include data analysis, content writing or generation, administrative support, and customer service.
Talent development is one of the main factors in leveraging corporate internships
Companies and interns derive several benefits from their relationship. While companies develop and acquire valuable talent, interns gain real-world experience. In fact, according to the study, talent development is the main driver for leveraging internships among SMEs. It encourages mentoring or leadership development (42%) and serves as a breeding ground for recruiting new talent (41%). About 40% thought it increased productivity, while 37% felt it provided a cost-effective workforce.
Although having interns is rewarding, it also comes with some challenges. About 50% said finding qualified candidates was a major challenge, while 32% said ensuring a productive and meaningful internship experience was a major challenge. According to 27%, providing supervision and mentoring was a major challenge.
To address these challenges, companies must create a structure with clear learning objectives and dedicated mentors.

SMEs should have a realistic approach to AI
There is enormous appeal for AI and its capabilities. However, there is also an argument for SMEs to approach technology cautiously and with a realistic view. For example, 56% believe AI can realistically handle less than a quarter of the marketing responsibilities assumed by interns. Additionally, 76% of SMBs prefer to entrust work to people rather than software, highlighting the importance of human relationships and interactions.
There are also some concerns from SMEs regarding AI when it comes to internships. Around 50% believe AI could hinder interns’ experience in their role. Of these, 51% are concerned that AI will reduce their problem-solving skills, 49% are concerned that technology will reduce the hands-on learning experience, and 48% are concerned that technology stifles the expression of creativity.
To avoid these pitfalls, SMEs must strive to strike a balance between human capabilities and AI integration. They should also advocate project-based learning in internship programs and create tasks that provide hands-on opportunities and experiences.
AI can complement internship programs
Contrary to concerns and beliefs that AI will replace marketing interns, technology can be a valuable tool to enhance their capabilities without hindering their hands-on learning experience. That said, interns should consider learning AI skills to shine in today’s competitive and fast-paced landscape. At the same time, companies should leverage internships to train new talent and promote growth-oriented environments. The right balance between technology and human relations will ensure beneficial experiences for both employers and interns.
