ATLANTA, July 1, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — The AI Ethics Councilfounded by the CEO of Open AI Sam Altman and CEO of Operation HOPE John Hope Bryantheld its inaugural meeting on Friday June 28th In AtlantaThe group, which was born from a listening tour initiated last spring in Clark Atlanta University The project, co-led by Mr. Altman and Mr. Bryant, was created to ensure that traditionally underrepresented communities have a say in the evolution of AI generally, to help frame human and ethical considerations around the technology, and broad participation in the economic opportunities of artificial intelligence. The council was announced in December 2023 at the HOPE World Forums | Annual Meeting at Atlanta.
The AI Ethics Council is an interdisciplinary body of diverse experts, designed to become a leading authority in Iidentify, advise on, And addressing Ethical issues related to artificial intelligence and its impact on underserved and historically excluded communities. In addition to Mr. Altman and Mr. Bryant, the founding members of the council include:

- Ambassador Andrew J. YoungChairman of the Andrew J. Young Foundation, former Ambassador to the United Nations, former Mayor of Atlanta and civil rights icon
Additional members representing the technology and community sectors will be announced in the coming months.
At the inaugural meeting, James Hairston, Open AI’s head of international policy and partnerships, updated members on the current state of AI, including its challenges and opportunities. Bryant announced that he would host a gathering of technology leaders to advance issues of importance to the council and announced the Council website will be put online July 1, 2024“I see this website as our first milestone. Its substance will grow, expand, and deepen over time. Transparency will be a hallmark. I encourage all citizens, here and abroad, to educate themselves and their communities about what AI really is and isn’t,” Bryant said. “As a council, we want to focus our attention on the needle we can help move: expanding inclusive opportunities around our shared future, for all, when it comes to AI.”
In addition to Mr. Bryant, Operation HOPE was represented by the President and Chief Financial Officer Brian Betts and CEO of the AI Ethics Council Eric KaplanTopics discussed by the Council included:
- The need to focus on technical capability: How will we develop, grow, evaluate and test the technical capability of the system?
- How to assess security, reporting and the adaptability of the law?
- What processes are in place to evaluate AI?
- What can be done in a more granular way to involve more components of society?
- How can we prepare for an uncertain/undetermined future with this new technology?
- How can AI benefit the world? What are the dangers? How can we optimize its adoption? How can we encourage equitable participation in economic and societal benefits?
The AI Ethics Council will form a framework of committees, with subcommittees and working groups, through which members will help guide AI ethical principles. The Council will initially focus on the intersection of technology and humanity for positive, ethical, and transformative impact broadly in the areas of economic opportunity for all, finance, education, policy, employment, accessibility, health and healthcare, and sustainability.
The AI Ethics Council will take a phased approach to the mission, seeking impact by leveraging increased public visibility and influence, deep technology sector expertise, policy-driven advocacy, partnerships, program development, and active engagement with technology, business, community, government, and other stakeholders. Expected outcomes include:
- Creation of a Council and Committees composed of multidisciplinary experts dedicated to the advancement of AI ethics and a positive vision of the future of our world.
- Development and dissemination of guidelines and best practices in AI ethics.
- Engaging education leaders, community leaders, business leaders and entrepreneurs, government, technologists of good, and the public to foster informed discussions and decisions about the ethics of AI.
- Promoting ethical use of AI through education and engagement.
- Empowerment, inclusion, economic opportunities and action where appropriate and where the Council can add value.
