Adoption of AI and ML among SMEs is increasing steadily, with significant progress being made in IT/ITeS, healthcare and BFSI sectors according to the new report. “Digital information on SMEs” study by Tata Tele Business Services (TTBS) and Cybermedia Research (CMR). Although many SMEs are in the early stages of adopting these emerging technologies, some sectors are making notable progress.
The IT and services sector is at the forefront of AI and ML adoption, with 35% of SMBs using these technologies. These tools are primarily used to improve user experience, automate various processes, and drive innovation. The industry’s inherent familiarity with technology and its rapid pace of innovation are key factors contributing to this advanced adoption. AI and ML are particularly used to optimize IT operations, improve cybersecurity, and develop intelligent automation solutions.
Meanwhile, in the banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) sector, which has clearly been one of the early adopters of big data analytics, 37% of SMEs are leveraging these capabilities. The key drivers behind this adoption are the need to gain deeper insights, manage risks effectively and provide personalized services to customers. Regulatory requirements and the availability of large data sets have further driven the adoption of big data analytics in the BFSI sector.
“With our domain expertise and innovative solutions, we enable SMEs to harness the transformative power of cloud solutions for sustainable success in an increasingly digital world,” said Vishal Rally, Senior Vice President – Product and Marketing, Tata Teleservices.
In the healthcare, diagnostics and pharmaceutical sectors, the potential of big data analytics and AI to transform operations and improve outcomes is widely recognised. According to the report, 33% of SMEs in this sector are leveraging big data analytics, while 31% are adopting AI. These technologies are being used to improve clinical outcomes, streamline operations and accelerate drug discovery processes. However, adoption remains uneven, with many organisations facing challenges such as data silos, outdated legacy systems and skills gaps.
“Cloud adoption unlocks access to cutting-edge advancements like AI, enabling SMBs to compete and thrive. Partnering with trusted experts is essential to maximizing the potential of the cloud, from improved customer support to innovative solutions,” said Prabhu Ram, Head, Industrial Intelligence Group (IIG), Cyber Media Research (CMR)
The findings of the SME Digital Insights report suggest that SMEs are increasingly interested in leveraging data and AI to gain a competitive advantage. However, fully realizing the potential of these technologies will require sustained investment, cultural change, and concerted efforts to build the necessary capabilities. Organizations will need to address challenges such as integrating disparate data sources, updating legacy systems, and closing the skills gap to take full advantage of AI and big data analytics.
