According to the company, the tools will be suspended while Meta is in talks with the Brazilian data protection authority (ANPD) to answer doubts about GenAI.
It is worth noting that earlier this month, the ANPD banned Meta from training its AI models on Brazilian personal data, citing “risks of serious harm and difficulties for users.”
Meta Updates Privacy Policy to Use Data for Training AI Models
In May, Meta updated its privacy policy, allowing itself to use publicly available data from Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram in Brazil for AI training. This data includes posts, images, and captions.
The ANPD has decided that the company will have to adapt its privacy policy to exclude the section relating to the processing of personal data for the training of generative AI.
Brazil is a crucial market for Meta, with a population of over 200 million. Brazil is the second most used country by WhatsApp for Meta, after India.
Multimodal AI models: Meta could follow Apple’s lead in the EU
In a related development, Meta is reportedly holding back its next multimodal AI model – and those to come – in the EUthe European Union (EU) due to an alleged lack of clarity from regulators.
Meta said it notified European regulators months in advance before publicly announcing the use of publicly available data on its social media platforms. However, it received only minimal feedback, which it said it responded to. In June, Meta was ordered to suspend training on EU data.
“We will be launching a multimodal Llama model in the coming months, but not in the EU due to the unpredictable nature of the European regulatory environment,” Meta said in a statement to Axios.
Similarly, Apple said it would not release its Apple Intelligence features in the region due to regulatory concerns.
